ArthritisOVERVIEW:Arthritis is the inflammation of one or more joints—anywhere bones meet in the human body—and related tissues with symptoms that include pain, swelling, stiffness, loss of movement, redness, and heat. Arthritis types include:
- Osteoarthritis (also called degenerative joint disease), the most common form of arthritis that typically affects knees, hips, and fingers, is often caused by aging or injury
- Rheumatoid arthritis, the second-most common type, occurs when the body’s immune system attacks itself; often affects hands and feet and can also effect organs and systems
- Juvenile arthritis is an umbrella term for any form of arthritis that affects children
- Gout, in which crystallization occurs between (usually) smaller joints; typically affects the large toe; more common among men
According to the CDC, as of 2005 46.4 million (or 1 in 5) Americans suffered from some form of arthritis, which is also the nation’s leading cause of disability. Arthritis is more common among women and the elderly, and is aggravated by being overweight. Managing your weight and getting doctor-approved physical activity can help.
